BEDFORD, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – It has become the most expensive road to take in North Texas.
It costs up to $ 20 to access the TEXpress lanes on the 121 between Fort Worth and DFW Airport.
Toll prices in medium-sized cities are high enough that some drivers tell us they prefer to stay in traffic.
It’s right there in big, bright lights on a digital sign overlooking the passing vehicles below.
Still, Darrell Key couldn’t believe his eyes when he noticed it as he was traveling with his wife today from Grand Prairie to the Mid Cities.
“I said it was probably a problem when we ran into another, we said it still was,” said Darrell Key, a resident of Grand Prairie.
It refers to the toll rate of $ 20 for single occupant vehicles to use TEXpress lanes through Hurst, Euless, Bedford during peak hours.
The lanes were created seven years ago to provide a faster way to avoid heavy traffic on the 121 between Irving and Fort Worth.
But some drivers take another route because of the higher price.
“For me, it’s not really worth it, I mean the traffic is always surly. You have to pay for something that isn’t really usable, ”said a Bedford resident. Pablo Castillo.
The highway management company that operates the lanes under a deal with local governments says don’t blame them.
They say they are contractually bound to increase tolls to keep traffic at 50 miles per hour.
It means setting prices that make express lanes a real luxury.
“Unlike other fixed toll roads, prices on TEXpress lanes fluctuate based on traffic conditions and real-time demand. This helps avoid traffic jams and allows traffic to flow freely at a minimum of 50 mph along the corridor, ”LBJ Express / North Tarrant Express said in a statement.
TEXpress lane managers say that once the volume of traffic goes down, the prices and people who don’t like it should complain to their elected officials.
Thus, rush hour in this part of DFW will continue to be an expensive trip, except for those who choose an alternate route.
If you notice on the signs, the tolls are even over $ 20 for people without a toll tag.
CBS 11 has learned that toll lane fares are recalculated every 5 minutes, 24 hours a day.
