Government releases Hanimaadhoo airport development schedule

The government has released the schedule that Hanimaadhoo International Airport will be developed.

According to the schedule released by the Ministry of Economy, the detailed project report and prequalification process are now complete. The tendering process will begin on July 31 and is expected to be completed by August 30. Contracts will be awarded for the development of the airport on September 29 and the project is expected to be completed by June 29, 2023.

The development of Hanimaadhoo airport is being financed under an $ 800 million line of credit program from India’s EXIM bank. The main components of the project will be carried out by Indian companies. The government has announced that it will expand the current airport boundaries by adding 853,937 square feet of land. However, the island’s council and its residents have expressed concern about this.

Economy Minister Fayyaz Ismail has previously said that if citizens have concerns about the extension of the airport’s boundaries, changes can be made to the airport’s plans. In this regard, the construction of a transit hotel on the additional land may be omitted from the project. The terrain is the most important for extending the track, and the track will be extended by 2,460 meters in the first phase, Fayyaz said. Further extensions are planned in ten years, but if the island’s council does not wish to grant land for the project, the airport will have to be moved to another location, Fayyaz said. Therefore, it is important to plan ahead and secure the land in advance, the minister said.
