As Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport is flooded with domestic tourists, its managers have encouraged passengers to use public transport to reduce overcrowding.
An airport representative said passenger numbers had increased significantly in recent days. The planned capacity of the domestic terminal is around 100,000 passengers per day, but this number had increased to 102,000 on June 24.
The number of domestic passengers at the airport has increased by 40% compared to peak periods in the summer of 2019, before Covid-19 hit.
“With the number of tickets booked, we expect passenger numbers to reach 110,000 per day in early July,” the representative said.
The high number of passengers, as well as the fact that more and more people use personal vehicles to get to the airport instead of public transport, have overloaded the parking lot of the terminal. There are 555 parking spaces, but even with measures to keep traffic flowing, it still can’t handle the number.
As such, the airport has encouraged passengers to use public transport instead of personal vehicles to get to and from the terminal. If they choose to use a personal vehicle for pick-up purposes, the vehicle should arrive just before the aircraft lands so as not to take up unnecessary parking space.
Eventually, the airport plans to deploy an electronic toll system and build additional parking spaces.
