Holidaymakers who experience delays are normally protected by EU law, which the UK retained after Brexit – although the government is considering diverging for domestic flights.
This law allows passengers to up to £520 per person as compensation for delays more than three hours, and, for a cancellation delay of more than five hours, a refund.
It also stipulates other entitlements such as meals and refreshments, possibly hotel accommodation including transportation costs, and the ability to make two brief phone calls or send two faxes or emails .

The amount you will receive as compensation depends on the duration of your flight:
- EUR 250 for flights up to 1,500 km
- EUR 400 for flights within the EU over 1,500 km and for all other flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km
- EUR 600 for all other flights
However, compensation does not apply in cases where the delay is caused by ” exceptional circumstances” that are beyond the control of the airline.
This includes things like weather and third-party strikes.
