Perry Goyal: from counter management to hotel chain management

PART 4: Over the past decade, Perry Goyal has taken on a different challenge off the cricket pitch. The Patiala native – part of Virat Kohli’s 2008 champion team – runs his family’s property business, including a chain of hotels started by his father Radhey Shyam Goyal.

“As a cricketer, you live a different life and you often stay away from what’s going on in the outside world. When I decided to quit cricket, it was a well-considered decision. J always believed that the goal shouldn’t just be to get into any team but to be able to play 50-100 games, and when I couldn’t achieve that, I made the decision to leave .

“At first it took me a while to understand things like approvals, the building process, the sales network, but over time I learned,” says Goyal, who holds an MBA. in Family Business Management from SP Jain Institute, Mumbai.

A wicket-keeper batsman, Goyal began training with coach Mahesh Inder Singh, father of Reetinder Singh Sodhi. Goyal came through the Punjab U-15, U-17 and U-19 teams but was unable to play for the Punjab senior team, although he represented PCA in the Buchi Babu tournament. The 2008 U-19 World Cup remains his only international tournament.

It was during his U-17 days that Goyal first saw Kohli at a tournament in Patiala. “He broke a double cent there. Later, when I was part of the Indian U-17 camp, Virat came to participate in the U-19 zone tournament. The India U-19 squad for the England tour was to be selected after this tournament and Virat’s form was not good.

“The day before the team announcement, some teammates talked about Virat’s lack of form. “I’ll hit a double cent and I’ll be on the flight to England,” Virat replied. And that’s what happened the next day,” says Goyal.

In the U-19 World Cup, Goyal couldn’t get a single game as first-choice wicketkeeper Shreevats Goswami played every game. The tournament took place when Goyal’s only sister was due to marry. He missed the wedding and that’s his only regret.

“As a cricketer, I understand that I play while someone is sitting down and the same can happen with me. As Shreevats had performed well in previous tournaments, he was the first-choice wicket-keeper. Our coach Dav Whatmore also conveyed the same and I understood We also understood that the victory of the team is also ours Every time my mother called she only asked me to bring the Cup people at home and not even asking about my sister’s wedding.

Goyal keeps in touch with his 2008 teammates via social media. “I joined Kings XI Punjab management in 2015 and met most of my U-19 teammates during the IPL. We all keep in touch through social media and share our happy moments. Recently, when Virat left the captaincy, we all supported his decision.

For Goyal, one memory stands out from the U-19 triumph. “Cricket taught me discipline and it helped me a lot. I had carried an Indian flag with me in Malaysia. Waving the flag with my teammates after winning the trophy remains my fondest memory.
