QAIA will welcome more than 2.5 million passengers by May 2022

Amman, June 2022: International Airport Group announced that Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) had handled 2,536,484 passengers (PAX) through May 2022, marking a 200.5% increase and a 23.4% decrease from 2021 figures and 2019, respectively. Additionally, QAIA recorded 25,336 aircraft movements (ACMs), an increase of 125.0% and a decrease of 17.0% from 2021 and 2019 figures, respectively. QAIA also handled 23,475 tons of cargo, which is 26.4% more and 42.5% less than the figures recorded in 2021 and 2019, respectively.

During the month of May, QAIA received 701,383 PAX – showing substantial growth of 189.7% and 20.2% compared to 2021 and 2019 figures, respectively – boosted by the Eid al Fitr break which boosted traffic, which was celebrated this year in early May as opposed to June 2019. In the same vein, QAIA recorded 6,374 ACMs, up 120.4% and 5.2% – compared to figures from 2021 and 2019, respectively. QAIA also handled 4,621 tonnes of cargo, indicating a 9.5% increase and a 50.0% decrease from 2021 and 2019 figures, respectively.

“May’s PAX figures represent positive year-over-year growth compared to 2021 – largely due to the extension of the Eid al Fitr holiday and the easing of travel restrictions in Jordan and the world. We look forward to seeing steady progress over the coming months as we enter the summer holidays, Eid al Adha holidays and Hajj season,” commented International Airport Group CEO, Nicolas Claude.

In 2007, following a transparent and open international competitive bidding process, the Jordanian government awarded Airport International Group a 25-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) concession agreement to manage the rehabilitation, expansion and operation of Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA); Jordan’s main gateway to the world.

Since the start of the agreement, QAIA has ranked first for four years in the “Best Airport by Size and Region: Middle East” category of the Airport Service Quality Survey for airports serving 5-15 million passengers and was among the top two in the “Best Airport by Region: Middle East” category for four consecutive years. According to an in-depth study commissioned by Airport International Group and conducted by International Air Transport Association (IATA) Consulting, in 2019 QAIA supported 238,000 jobs and JOD 2.5 billion (8.9%) of GDP. By 2032, these figures are expected to increase to 278,000 jobs and 3.9 billion JOD of GDP. Highlighting its socio-economic importance and positioning itself as the main entry point to the Kingdom, QAIA handles over 97% of passengers and 99% of cargo.
