ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – On Thursday, Sun Country Airlines launched its first nonstop flight to Rochester International Airport (RST).
The airline offers nonstop flights to Fort Myers, Florida and Phoenix, Arizona.
“Winter is the best time for us to go and we just decided that last year was just too complicated and this year was our year to go. We’re just going to spend three weeks and hang out with no order from the day and enjoy the warm weather,” said Emily Fowler, a traveler from Fort Myers.
The first Sun Country flight to arrive from Fort Myers landed around 3:30 p.m. RST said the plane could carry about 186 passengers. A passenger on that flight said there were fewer than 20 people on the plane, but the one departing was almost at capacity.
“It brings a whole new element to what we do here at RST,” said John Reed, Managing Director of RST. “In the past, we’ve really focused on the business traveler. Opportunities to work with Sun Country that truly suited your vacation style are now here in Rochester.
Sun Country’s arrival comes four months after United Airlines ended service at the airport.
RST said Sun Country flights are seasonal, and from now on the airline website only allows travelers to book flights until April.
“Bookings for the rest of the time here are looking good,” Reed said.
Flights from Phoenix begin Friday.
