Seattle named best airport in North America by Skytrax

FIFA World Cup will draw crowds to Qatar and test the airport

This ‘even brighter year’ includes media attention around the world focusing on the Gulf nation as it hosts the FIFA World Cup in November and December. Not without controversy, the sports showcase will see around 1.7 million people visit Qatar during the tournament. Clearly, this is a chance for the best airport in the world to shine and show why it deserves this accolade.

The World Airport Awards are voted for by customers and considered the benchmark for the global airport industry, rating over 550 airports.

“We are delighted to announce that Hamad International Airport was voted the best airport in the world for 2022, repeating its success from 2021,” said Edward Plaisted CEO of skytrax.

“Our congratulations go to the management, staff and stakeholders of Hamad International Airport who have all contributed to this achievement for the second consecutive year. As airports around the world continued to be impacted by the pandemic throughout 2021, Hamad International Airport served 17.1 million passengers in 2021 and continued with expansion plans.

“Our congratulations go out to all of the award-winning airports here today, for whom the last two years have been extremely difficult to cope with the many COVID-19 restrictions and the sharp decline in travel demand. Air travel returning rapidly on a more normal level, the challenge for all airports now is to provide the highest standards to customers with heightened travel expectations.

The best airport in the Americas, Seattle-Tacoma, ranked 27th in the world, but that was a significant increase from 2021, when it ranked 53rd. This saw Seattle overtake Vancouver, which fell from 24 to 28 in the 2022 rankings.
